BACKSTAGE PASS - the stories from behind the scenes
Contributors: Bill D.
Cover Story: Wank Punter - Dirty Secrets
Last week we spoke with Mark Nakamura aka “Feedback” about the band the ideas, how it all started, Mark’s views on Bill C10 and Gabi and the Fluffettes, for those who are not familiar with this hard rocking Zappa-ish group we will talk a little about the music and what’s next for Mark and the Band.
BD: The first CD ‘Wank Punter’s “Unlubricated” was a collage of original music from most genres of the music pool. With 13 songs you seem to have covered the gambit of tunes all on one CD.Nubian Princess with the heavy Marlie reggae beat, Cornholio with the Latin Mexican influence and even Sex Worker and the British accent of Joey, was this done as homage to the artists of the past that you may have been influenced by?
Mark: Yes and no. My influences are what they are and surely they have played a major part in my style and approach to writing. More than anything though, the wide range of genres represented on that record was more of a stand against the way modern pop records are BD produced and packaged. I was sick of everything being so consistently the same. From artist to artist, track to track. I yearn for the day to return when artists explored and incorporated styles beyond the typical mainstream palate. Today, it’s apparently a sin to play reggae if you’re a hard rock band. That’s just bulshit in my mind.
Regarding the British voice in Sex Worker, that was Gunner, the original keyboardist/2nd vocalist in the band. He’s no longer with us but we remain on best of terms as friends. He got an offer to audition for Blind Melon (before they ultimately decided to call it quits) and we gave him our blessings. He’s currently working in Florida as a session musician.
BD: With “Unlubricated” you mentioned that there actually are no obscene slang words that it is all “tongue in cheek” or done as a satire, however you still did not get mainstream radio airplay whereas bands like Nickleback and songs like “something in your mouth or Theory of a Dead Man” with their song “Bad Girlfriend” both were on heavy rotation but not Wank Punter, yet their lyrics are quite explicit, why do you think that is?
Mark: Money, or lack thereof. All kidding aside, even though money has a fair bit to do with the issue, the band has been handicapped by virtue of its name, by the over-all concept that we’re satirizing sex and sexuality, and perhaps even our unique relationship with the porn stars we celebrate. It’s all those things combined that makes certain gatekeepers rather squeamish and apprehensive about supporting it. Go figure? The largest consumers of live adult entertainment are politicians and sports and entertainment figures. Don’t ask me how I know that though. Yet, the mere mention of porn or prostitutes and you get this up-turned nose thumbed at you.
Granted, not all the tracks on “Unlubricated” are squeaky clean. But songs such as Driver, Sex Worker, Nubian Princess, Back door Man, just to name a few, are far tamer than some of the songs that have been successfully released in the not too distant past.
Going back to your juxtaposition regarding Nickelback and Theory Of A Dead Man, they can do these one off’s and get away with it as the body of their work doesn’t consistently fall under that risqué demographic. That’s the biggest difference from what I can see. So when bands such as Buck Cherry et al momentarily expose the fangs of a wolf, they get to do it with sheep’s clothing.
Wank Punter ultimately became a very passionate project of mine as I dearly wanted to test the boundaries of free speech without the benefit of cloaking the band in acceptable attire. I wanted to see, in the 21st century no less, if there were morality cops still in existence trying to govern our thoughts and ideas here in the western world and to what length they would go to try and silence those voices.
BD: Now the song “Captain Cockblock” has that great baseball cut in déjà vu of Meatloaf, why did you come up with that idea or spoof of the large one himself ?
Mark: It’s my Reality TV version of how I envisioned Meatloaf attempting to score on the field. I just couldn’t picture a guy like that scoring a home run with a hot babe so I penned it as a flame out. This is why the guitar solo that The Discombobulator played at the end of the monologue has a frenetic, stumbling approach to it’s dynamic peak and why Joey delivers a tongue-tied vocal performance of sheer gibberish to evoke the emotional confusion. That part of the song was a riot to record. Joey had us all in tears from laughing so hard.
The music video for that tune got censored off of YouTube within days of going live. And that was the soft core pixilated cut! It features AVN award winning porn stars Felicia Fox and Mike South. Gene Simmons gets a bit of face time as well. I managed to get some footage of him at the AVN convention in 2005 and cut it into the clip. You can see the uncensored version on the band’s website. It’s hidden in the Backstage Pass section.
BD: The band even seems to have a softer side with “Fatherly Advice” but yet the lyrics are almost opposite of the musical love song progression with the hint of incest throughout, have you ever thought when writing something like this just to keep it mainstream as a love ballad instead of throwing in the twist through the lyrics, you could have had all the easy rock stations eating out of your hand. You have another candidate with ‘A Girl like You”.
Mark: Ya, but where would the challenge be in doing that, let alone the fun? I’m all about shock and awe.
“Fatherly Advice” isn’t about incest. It’s basically decoding the typical love ballad and all that it truly stood for over time. In short, it’s as sincere a song as you could ever imagine in that I pull no punches telling the truth about why we write those damned retched, dirges. Which is, simply to get laid.
The song “A Girl like You” on face value is pretty harmless. Fact of the matter is, it’s a stalker type song, sung through the voice of the antagonist. It’s an emotional admission of not being in the same league as the object of his desire yet the over-powering urge to have her compels the subject to take the plunge and cross that line in the sand, all the while asking if it’s really such a crime to steal her heart away. The heart is a metaphor for innocence.
It’s a sad reflection of our times in the sense that recent generations of young adults have been weaned at the tit of entitlement to such a degree that certain individual males simply snap when confronted by rejection of any sort and react in the only way they know how.
BD: Driver has an almost U2 type of intro and then turns it up a notch with a straight on rock beat. Is that to catch the attention of those hooked on the Irish goodniks sound or did it just end up like that?
Mark: Driver was one of those songs that came in a flash. The damned tune was finished within an hour or two of the process. The U2 guitar bits were part of the Discombobulator’s contribution to the tune. But from what I can remember, there was no premeditation taking us in that particular direction. Funny that you mention it as I always thought of Driver as having a Fleetwood Mac feel to the drums, especially in the verses. The rhythm section reminds me of Go Your Own Way.
BD: Now the “in the face rock anthems” are all there in “Supersize Me”, “Back Doorman” with great vocal harmonies,” Go Figure” and “Mainstream is Learning”, where we have the Geddy Lee falsetto voice ,is this the true sound of WP when you are not being satirical?
Mark: The Geddy voice is Gunner once again. The true sound of the band is what you get collectively from the record as a whole. It’s a pretty diverse band with eclectic tastes but a band that still maintains pop sensibilities within its sound. Whether we are being satirical or not, musically, what you hear is what you get. This is true of the live show as well.
BD: Then we have the first cut Kirsten Price, this has the jazz and funk beat of a Zappa tune, it rocks and chops it’s way to the dance floor. Was Zappa a big influence in your writing?
Mark: Absolutely no doubt about it. No Zappa, no Wank Punter. Although, I decided to eschew the far more esoteric and musically challenging arrangement approach of songs such as “The Black Page”, “Zombie Wolf” etc. Wank Punter is a more “Dirty Love”/”Why Does It Hurt When I Pee” kind of thing.
BD: Now we come to your next CD. Six songs only, that is pared down a lot from 13 in “Unlubricated’ is the experiment over and you feel you have found your groove?
Mark: We definitely found our groove. It’s a bit more narrow in scope, genre wise compared to the last CD but the real reason for making an EP as opposed to another full length CD is more indicative of the times we are living in. The industry has changed so drastically that it appears to have become a singles market once again. The irony being, no one takes you seriously if that is all you have… 1 song. Hence, the EP. I wanted all killer, no filler and with our label (Blue Sapphire – distributed by DEP/UNIVERSAL) anxious for the follow up record, I figured an EP would be the best way to hit ‘em hard and fast and if everyone really digs it, it’ll leave them wanting more.
BD: “Plain Brown Wrapper”, that is a great marketing concept on it’s own, just like the condom on the first CD ,who came up with those ideas?
Mark: Me. I am responsible for packaging and marketing everything here as well as maintaining my creative portfolio in the song writing department. I’m a pretty twisted character and this stuff just lurks in the nether regions of my mind… In truth, it’s a throwback to the days when porn videos were mailed in plain brown wrappers to the recipients with the sender being anonymous. Wait till you see the pic on the disc itself. ; ) Parents be forewarned.
BD: Without giving it all away can you give us a run down on what we can expect to hear on the PBW CD coming out next month?
Mark: First off, the street date for the release is September 15th. What else can everyone expect? 6 incredibly rocking tunes! Seriously, this CD doesn’t let up from the first track on. It begins with The Bionic Chronic, a satirical poke at rappers who openly celebrate the consumption of illicit, combustible, amusement aid. But instead of using typical base descriptors to delineate our story line, I employed more thought provoking metaphors that, on their own would be harmless enough.
How the song actually came about is an interesting story in its own right. My nephew, who is heavy into rap and hip hop and is an aspiring writer, was penning a lyric one day and read it out to me. I wasn’t pleased with the language he was using and decided to sit down and provide a brief example of how he could word it in an intellectually thought provoking manner without cursing up a blue streak. That’s how the opening verse came about. I decided to continue on with it just to see where it would lead me. I owe it to my nephew David for providing the muse to inspire this track.
It’s a bit of a creative departure for the band as it incorporates rap, sampled beats merged with real drums, and a Beasty Boys kind of feel to it. I plan to exploit this track heavily.
BD: Definitely has the Beaties sound.
Mark: It also showcases the lovely vocal talents of our back-up singers, especially Cherry Poppins, who I am currently producing as a solo artist in her own right. I had this harmony part reminiscent of the Andrew Sisters’ vocal style and got the girls to lay it over alt rock beats in the bridge of the tune. It’s pretty outrageous.
Switch is next on the disc and lyrically speaking, is pretty self-explanatory if you’re into the BDSM scene. It also showcases Cherry at the end of the tune as she transitions from a submissive back up to the bitch wail of a dominatrix.
BD: Like Mary Clayton with the Stones.
Mark:The most outrageous track though, hands down goes to Glory Oh Gloria. It’s a rocking lament about a man’s experience when he discovers a glory hole wall in his youth and how the momentous event had scarred him for life.
BD: Can’t say I’ve been there, next! You mentioned “branch off projects” from Wank Punter can you tell us a bit about Cheery Poppins , Kirsten’s solo career and where she’s going with it and can we expect more?
Mark: Cherry Poppins, aka Kirsten Rea, is in the early stages of recording her debut CD. It won’t be anything remotely similar to her stint with Wank Punter so don’t be expecting her to crawl up a stripper pole during a serenade. But we have very high hopes for this remarkable talent. Not only is she beautiful, she can sing her tail off and writes equally as well. We’re taking our time developing the songs for her and in the meantime, having her cut her teeth in such hostile environments such as a Wank Punter live show and backstage party will surely enable her to fend for herself when she assumes the role of band leader with her very own brigade.
Expect her EP to drop sometime during the winter of 09.
BD: Finally, what do you listen to on your I Pod?
Mark: I surf a lot on the internet music sites and I really dig this one guitarist who calls himself Bumblefoot. He hasn’t quit reached the level of ubiquity that other better known guitar slingers such as Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, et al have achieved but has great tunes on YouTube. I like Bucket head as well. Otherwise Frank Zappa of course and I have their complete collection. More current bands that I listen to are Tool, System of a Down, Lamb Of God as well as bands like Green Day. They’re like cinnamon candy with a kick.
BD: Any Canadian acts?
Mark: There’s a burgeoning new music scene in Canada and I believe it’s far more relevant than what is coming out of the USA at the moment. Unfortunately, we lack the industry to support it so quite a few acts aren’t getting the recognition they truly deserve. Bands such as White Cowbell Oklahoma (who happen to be stablemates of ours), are making waves in the clubs and packing ‘em to the rafters yet mainstream doesn’t cover it so only the hardcore fans are aware of them.
Nickelback is a good example of the blandness that’s quite endemic of the biz on the national and international level. Although I will go on record to admit that I really like “Something in Your Mouth”. It’s a very well crafted song. I do like a lot of Prog rock like Pink Floyd, Genesis (old stuff), Gentle Giant, ELP, and a little Dream Theatre as well.
BD: Any advice for the young bands and musicians out there?
Mark: Yes, learn from the past and go find another career ! All kidding aside, unless you are truly passionate about the craft of music, you are in for a lot of grief and heartache. Those with an undying love for the art will soldier forward regardless of the circumstances, regardless of the odds or the cost.
But there’s also something that many of us put little thought into when pursuing our dreams. That is the feelings of those who love and care for you. They too, will suffer (as much if not more) along-side you in this journey of yours. I have a failed marriage, a parade of ex-girlfriends, and a stream of soured business partners to prove my point.
But if you fall within that particular demographic of ‘never-say-die’ intestinal fortitude, then your best option is to study and listen to a lot of music and get the skills that go beyond being a performer. This would include, although not limited to, entertainment law, accounting, product management, marketing and promotion, public relations, and the gift of the gab. You have to make the decisions much like a businessman is required to do on a day to day basis. This applies whether you are selling widgets or rock n’ roll (and I’ve done both).
If you manage to learn the aforementioned skills, you will soon learn how to be self reliant and self sufficient and that will give you the self confidence you will need in order to succeed and create your own Cinderella story. No one is going to pave the way for you, especially in today’s music industry climate. The irony is, you have to be prepared to do it yourself before anyone else will come and join you for the ride.
BD: Thanks Mark

|Wank Punter brought their best glam game, Digging Roots re-imagined the blues, Bella Clava made the keyboards beg for mercy and Malajube proved music is truly the universal language. All this and more from CMW 2009 in Toronto.
Just like last year, CMW's opening night was cold as a lap dancer when the music stops. What was noticeably different was the crowd size, smallish ones being very much the case this year.
Even the usually packed out Montreal showcase at El Mocambo weren't packed, despite the presence of marquee acts like We Are Wolves and Malajube. It didn't stop the latter for making their strong case for being Canada's rock'n' roll band. Why? Well, they sing in one of the two official languages in this case understood by maybe 10% of the house yet there was never a communication breakdown between band and audience.
Never a problems telling whether the hairsome foursome was on about getting some, doing some or fighting the power some. Malajube's current fusion of garage and classic rock is hook-laden, cleverly put together and would rip the drown of Kings Of Leon.
Zipped up to the Bovine Sex Club for a quick Jaeger and usually enjoyable gal garage cutups Machetes. For whatever reason, there was no chemistry between they and I this night and at the suggestion of Ian, in town from da 'Peg, rolled over to the Silver Dollar for little known Mother Murder. Too young to even know from retro and too full of juice to care, they swaggered and swung through a handful of well-crafted garage rock tunes to a wildly appreciative group of friends who managed to work up the moxie to rush the stage and attempt a de-pantsing of the lead singer. This is why you go to opening night: for the little bands which create such outbreaks of pure rock'n'roll.
Wank Punter made the most of its prime slot at the Hard Rock. The full house was primed, the energy level was throbbing as Joey Bigapini and the crew ripped through the material from the Unlubricated debut album. With new backing singer and Tina Fey lookalike Cherry Poppins settling into her role and smoother choreography from the Fabulous Wankettes, the band showed the beneficial effects of the its recent T.Dot club tour. They've tightened up and become more invested in the live dynamic without losing that sexy funhouse thing they do so well. Strangest development in the Wank Punter camp has been the emergence of Discombobulator as an unlikely sex symbol. For whatever reason mask-lovin' reasons, the big guy's become a babe magnet. Given his size, make that a fridge magnet.
By Saturday, the crowds were back to usual all lineups, all the time standards , which meant a goodly crowd on hand for the T.Dot debut of Digging Roots at the Hard Rock Cafe.. The core of the quintet is ShoShona Kish and Raven Kanatakta and the material's written from a First Nations perspective. The sound breaks down roughly into reggae and blues derived tunes and while the former is the band's bread and butter dancefloor stuff, the Berklee trained Kanatakta has some very radical approaches to blues. With atonals aplenty and call and response vocals leads between himself and the diminutive and fiery Kish, songs like the epic "Seeds" can take you into gripping and unexpected territory. Digging Roots are flirting with a sound that s at once deeply primal and contemporary catchy..If they can hold together, this crew can go far.
The pink and black Jeager-soaked ambiance of the Rok Boutique is not for the faint of heart at the best of times but was the perfect venue for aspiring Metal Queen Basia Lyjak. Backed by a pedigreed pack of hired guns fronted by former Edwin guitarist Ron Bechard, Lyjack served up fierce, tight classic rock tunes with just enough quirk and didn't hang around long enough to bore you. Tough set, showed promise but didn't hear that one hot single the lady's gonna need to get to the next level.
Next, the Rox Botique morphed into a most decadent art bar for minimalist trio Bella Clava. The array of bustiers now peppered with balaclava-wearing fans, mirroring the mannequin onstage in red dress and balaclava. This Thunder Bay act has one speed, full forward with chugging guitar, manic keyboards, relentless drumming and the frantic vocals of Caitlin Cady. While this crew had no trouble maintaining the energy level and have worthy tunes like "Didn't Come Here To Love You " and "Eve Drop" a touch of variety in the song structure wouldn't have been a bad thing ether.

|Already a TV hit in the US, T.Dot's notorious crew of glammed up sex funksters Wank Punter drop their debut album, Unlubricated, Tuesday. Can't think of a tarter antidote to the saccharine saturated ObamaRama we'll be sucking up that day.
All pumped from their warmup gig at the Horsehoe Tuesday, Wank Punter are go for debut album Unlubricated’s release party at Rock'n'Roll Heaven (1660 O’Connor Drive) Friday night.
Pyro restrictions and a shorter set time at the “Shoe curbed the WP throwdown somewhat but there was enough to put that “What the ...” look on the faces of a couple of dudes which could only mean one thing. They were in the band which had to follow Wank Punter, not fun. As they’re headlining at Rock’n’Roll Heaven, you won’t see that particular look but they’ll be lots to catch the eye, Wank Punter is a band on a mission but it’s not the one you might think. The flamboyant sextet of porn rockers, known for their outrageous live shows and slippery lyrics, are frequently mistaken for horned up glam rockers out for nothing but a good time.
Nothing wrong with that, guitarist and architect of the Wank Punter sound Feedback asserts but its really not the whole story.
“Wank Punter is all about female empowerment and liberation. We just come at it from a different angle. We write songs that for instance look at the situations of sex trade workers and the negative stereotypes they’re saddled with”.
Like Jay Reatard and AIDS Wolf, Wank Punter gets serious stick for its nomenclature, even before folks have heard a lick.
“Agents, bookers, we’ve been told straight up they don’t approve of what we do. This is usually based on a visit to the website where I suppose they interpret images to fit their preconceptions about this band.
“For instance, theres this feeling the songs are all about the most debauched behaviours, told in the most disgusting lyrics.
“Sure, we revel in wordplay and innuendo to the max but isn’t that more creative than a whole lot of gratuitous swearing?”
Feedback claims Wank Punter material is informed by his many years as a content provider in the flesh industry.
Most Wank Punters tunes are insider takes on common socio-sexual happenings in both the porn and regular worlds. Most often, the observations are coming from a humorous place and Feedback claims WP doesn’t get enough credit for being funny.
What’s undeniable is that they’re smart enough to keep flipping the script. While the band walks some provocatively thin lines on such as “Nubian Princess” and “Curse”, the bouncy “Supersize Me” is pure fun, “Driver” turns the gender tables in a sexual trade-off and “ A Girl Like You” is all about the yearning for that transcendent woman you’ll never have because deep down you know you won’t know what to do with her.
The over the top costumes and makeup send a message nobody’s taking any of this too seriously.
Wank Punter reference the pit bands that provided the music for the ladies back when peeling was called burlesque. This type of band had to be hip to the popular music of its time and Wank Punter is on point with its mashup of power funk, glam rock and nu-metal.
It’s a sound that’s appeared on Gene Simmons Family Jewels and put the band a number of times on Playboy TV’s Night Calls show. This translates into an easier ride for the band in the US but Feedback's committed to doing the breakthrough in reverse. The man wants a hometown appreciation of what Wank Punter’s about and the good they do.
“Fact is porn has a much more prominent place in the American cultural mainstream and that works to Wank Punter’s benefit. But Canada is beginning to get it more and more. All those shops and websites selling kinky gear and sex toys aren’t surviving on sex trade workers alone. “
Which is why Feedback maintains the live payoff for the band is in watching an audience latch onto the Wank Punter spirit.
“We were setting up in a club one night and a fairly demure young woman was hanging out asking about the show. I told her it was not uncommon for females to get onstage and try to outdo our dancers. “Gawd, that’s nasty, I could never do that”, she responded.
“At some point during the show I looked over and there she was beside the dancers, flashing and grinding up a storm and having the time of her life”.
With a charged-up lead singer, duelling guitars, two backing singers, three dancers and a heavy-hitting backline, there should be action aplenty. Feedback promises a full run through of Unlubricated’s 13 tracks, though not necessarily in the album order.
" I like to leave room for some kind of happening, either front stage or back, that might shape the set that night. More fun for the band".
And this guy knows from fun.

Wank Punter To Perform At 8th Annual "Everthing To Do With Sex Show" In Toronto
Controversial Canadian rock band Wank Punter has announced that they will be performing at the 8th annual “Everything To Do With Sex Show”, in Toronto on Saturday, October 20, 2007 on the Feature Stage. The band will also be hosting a booth on the show floor, manned by XXX Film Stars Regan Anthony and Ryder Skye, along with KSEX Radio personality Tony Batman. Wank Punter CDs, merchandise, and memorabilia, as well as photographs and autographs from the adult industry stars in attendance, will all be available to visitors at the booth.
Wank Punter is Canada’s very own rock/porn band, with two CDs worth of hard-driving rock and roll songs that are informed and influenced by the world of adult entertainment. The band, musical descendants of the outrageous Frank Zappa, are veterans of dozens of controversial shows in venues throughout Canada and the US. Fans have most recently enjoyed performances by the band on Playboy TV’s “Nite Calls with Jesse Jane”, and Wank Punter also performed live in 2006 at the legendary Sunset Strip venue Whiskey-A-Go-Go, once home to music legends The Doors and Guns N Roses.
Wank Punter’s eponymous first CD – now out of print and a collector’s item – was released in 2005 on a small, independent label. Featuring songs like “Glory Hole Gloria” and “Oh My Felicia!”, the disc enabled the band to garner attention both inside and outside the adult film world. No strangers to playing live onstage, the band performed at various adult industry expos, marketing their product at every stop and winning new fans with every live performance. Since then, Wank Punter has seen their popularity skyrocket. They now count Canadian promoter Gary Cormier – the promoter who helped to bring bands such as The Ramones and The Police to Canadian audiences for the first time – as a team member. The list of events the band has played is long, and they show no signs of slowing down. They plan to return to the studio and begin work on their third album – tentatively titled “Plain Brown Wrapper” – after their appearance at the “Everything To Do With Sex Show”.
Wank Punter’s current CD, featuring packaging that makes it look like a large condom wrapper, is entitled “Unlubricated” and is available now on itunes.com, as well as at select retailers throughout Canada. Containing songs like “Driver”, “Kirsten Price” and “Girl Like You”, it promises to be a smash hit for the group. Do good girls watch porn?
If not – or if so – does that make them a good (or not) person?
Trying to figure out the differences is not a simple task. It's not made any easier by watching roughly seven hours of feminist porn. (Although, washing down a giant bag of frozen licorice, with a jumbo coffee, is more conducive to thought than one might think.)
The research materials came courtesy of Toronto sex shop Good for Her and resembled work that was showcased at the shop's second annual Feminist Porn Awards last Friday.
The awards honour films that involve women who are positively and actively involved in porn industry roles ranging from actresses to directors. Anyone who thinks they know what female-oriented porn looks like might be shocked at how explicit this material is. No soft lighting, medieval dresses or long-haired men on unicorns in sight. It's porn.
Or, as shop manager Chanelle Gallant says: women enjoying pleasure and creative control, working with men who don't resemble overbaked slices of Peking duck.
This Friday hundreds – perhaps thousands – of sex enthusiasts will head to The Sex Show at the International Centre, near Pearson International Airport.
The three-day event, featuring porn icon Ron Jeremy, promises workshops on everything from fitness, Tantric sex and body oils to bondage gear.
There will also be porn and it's unlikely the majority of it was created with feminist sensibilities in mind. (The chance to win free breast implants is the tip-off.)
No matter your views on porn, can't we all agree that watching a band called Wank Punter would be worth the price of admission? Come on, they're giving away a guitar.
But back to bad girls and good feminists: If your interest is piqued by mainstream pornography – where we assume women are basically props – or if you like it, does it make you anti-feminist? Not a good person?
If you get turned on by feminist porn, can you still be considered a good, or virtuous, girl?
That some pornography objectifies and demeans women is about as certain as the fact water runs downhill. How different genders process pornography, and what that says about perceptions of women, isn't quite as simple.
That's one of countless points being tackled by Dr. Bobby Noble, assistant professor in the new Sexuality Studies program at York University. The first class graduated in April; the program operates within York's Women's Studies program. Students enrolled in Noble's year-long course – nicknamed Porn 101 – take on three months of theory before their first film.
Noble says women who watch porn can sometimes be stigmatized – he explains some might see it as: "There is no way to be a good woman who watches porn."
He says it's important to recognize feminist porn isn't the only porn "good" for women, a point its creators also admit. Rather, it's just picking up on the complexities of conventional porn and turning the vantage point on its head.
Labelling mainstream, or mass-distributed, porn as "bad," or assuming the women and men who watch it are anti-feminist, is just too simple a conclusion to draw.
It's a difficult concept for some, but good women watch porn – all kinds. You're not a bad girl if it takes a few dozen films, or trade shows, to figure out what turns you off – or on – or whether you want anything to do with porn at all.
If you're worried about what people think, just call it research.

How can the land that spawned both Tina Tyler and Rush not be sexy? The Sex Show, a production of Exotica Canada to be held at Toronto's International Centre (Hall 5) on June 8 and 9, features the standard passel of porn star appearances (Sunny Lane will be cavorting onstage with "porn-rock" band Wank Punter) and adult product exhibitors, but also offers a large slate of consumer-oriented seminars, including "The Secrets of Male Multiple Orgasm" (which would get real messy real quick unless your receptacle was open-ended). Somehow the event seems friendlier than similar shows south of the border, probably because of the nearness of Gordon Lightfoot. At the very least, it seems closer to the heart. - GP

TORONTO, Canada — KSEX Radio hosts Monica Mayhem and Tony Batman are heading to Toronto for Wank Punter's XXXmas Show at The Opera House Dec. 15.
"This is going to be a great show, and I'm fucking psyched that Wank Punter asked us to come along with them for this," Batman said. "Peter Anthony is handling the comedy warm up, and since I've been friends with him and members of WP for a while, it was a great opportunity for us to work together. Of course, when my co-host is as incredible as Monica, it sure didn't hurt that WP got her tits in the deal as well."
The Opera House is known for being a venue that holds onto all of its old-school charm, stemming from its days in the 1900s as a vaudeville theatre. Batman warned that things might get out of hand, however.
"Wank Punter is all about the sex in 'sex, drugs and rock and roll,'" Batman said. "It's perfect for Monica and I to bring along our friends from the adult industry and really heat up Toronto."
At this year's KSEX Awards, Mayhem was named the hottest KSEX Babe, while Batman received the Mike Rick memorial award.id
WEST HOLLYWOOD, Calif. -- Which comes first? Naughty song lyrics or rampant sexual promiscuity? The mainstream media have already drawn their own conclusions, but the adult industry can make up its own mind when it attends the official after party for 'Porn Rock' band Wank Punter, this Thursday, August 10 at Tangerine in West Hollywood. You can start the evening's promiscuity at 10 p.m., when the "Pre" After Party gets started two hours before the band begins to spew its filthy lyrics a block away at The Whiskey. Confused? Just come out and party with us all.
Black Widow Talent, World Wide Entertainment, Elite Entertainment and The Floating World present "Wank Punter: The Before & After Party", from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. at Tangerine, 8788 Sunset Blvd. (at Holloway), West Hollywood, Calif.
Already confirmed for the party are Mia Rose, Tyler Faith, Wankus, Lexi Lamour, Cytherea, Rita Faltoyano, Regan Anthony, Tommy Gunn, Marcus Allen and newcomer Cocoa Shannele. Adult industry can RSVP to Ric Williams, firstname.lastname@example.org, to be placed on the VIP list.
Ric Williams, of Black Widow Talent (http://www.talentbw.com) and Black Widow Productions (http://www.blackwidowproductions.com), is sponsoring the party to celebrate the launch of his new talent agency. Black Widow Talent is one of the only four licensed and bonded agencies in the adult industry, and a legitimate gateway for talent seeking work within the mainstream as well it's Stormy Daniels' official mainstream booking agency. Ric will be there with Team Tyler (http://www.tylerfaith.com <http://www.officialteamtyler.com> ) and Lexi Lamour (http://www.lexilamour.com), partners from both sides of his business.
Wank Punter (http://www.wankpunter.com) is not your typical rock n' roll band. Granted, it isn't the first time sex and rock has walked the aisle of unholy matrimony, as they are rather obvious bedfellows. But, where the bands that have influenced these raucous rockers have left off, Wank Punter has dutifully taken the baton and raised the gritty, prurient quotient substantially. Porn stars: if you'd like to be on Wank Punter's list at the Whiskey, hit up email@example.com.
There will be a media area on the terrace for photo ops and interviews, and Pamela Peaks and her TV crew will be on hand. Media interested in attending the party (and/or the Wank Punter show) should write to Terri Redor, firstname.lastname@example.org to be placed on the list.
Terri Redor of The Floating World (http://www.thefloatingworld.com) will be at the party to turn performers on to a new webmaster site created specifically to promote porn stars' own affiliate programs (http://www.promotepornstars.com). The site launches in September. Let him know you'd like your site(s) to be included.
Tangerine (http://www.tangerine.la) is just a block away from the world famous Whiskey; you can park at either venue and attend both the band's show and the after party with ease. Valet parking is available at both venues.
Tangerine features a plush lounge-like atmosphere plus an outdoor courtyard with spectacular views of the city.

Hailing from Toronto Canada, it would seem odd
that a band well over 5000 kilometers away from

One would think that they actuallylived or are
living the life after reading some of the lyrics
they have penned.
Upon speaking with Feedback, the de-facto leader
and founder of the band, my instincts proved correct.
Not only has he been in the adult biz for a considerable
period of time and in many capacities beginning
as a driver foran escort agency, his background
in mainstream entertainment had him experiencing
a number of intriguing situations where he sat
and watched two worlds collide.
Not that hes ready to mention any names, but hes
